optical fiber “wires”, the prototype of the distributed quantum computer

Researchers at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics in Germany used a 60-meter-long optical fiber to successfully interconnect two qubits located in different laboratories with a distributed quantum computer .

At such a distance, they realized quantum logic gates, which are the basic building blocks of quantum computers. It makes the system the prototype of the world’s first distributed quantum computer.

The research results have been published in the top issue of “Science”. aws ec2 describe-instances aws ec2 describe-instances

Simply coupling distant qubits to create entanglement between them has been achieved in the past, but now, this connection can be additionally used for quantum computing.

To this end, the researchers used modules composed of single atoms as qubits and placed them in two mirrors. Between these modules, they send individual light quanta, or photons, which are transmitted through optical fibers. Then the photons are entangled with the quantum states of the qubits in different modules. Subsequently, the state of one of the qubits changes according to the measured state of the “auxiliary photon”. aws ec2 describe-instances

The next focus of this research will be to connect more than two modules and carry more qubits in a single module.

The researchers said that this result will help to further advance this technology, it can build a distributed quantum computer, aws ec2 describe-instances the computer is composed of many modules, and these modules have only a small number of qubits, and use the above methods to connect to each other. This method can bypass the limitations of existing quantum computers and integrate more qubits into one setup to make a more powerful system.
